Urine cytology test — why?

A urine cytology test is a detailed examination searching for pathological cells, inflammatory cells, pathological microorganisms, and tumor cells in urine.

The first morning urine sample is the most suitable for collection. Pathological cells may form anywhere near the urinary tract, in the kidney, or ureter, and pass through the urethra.

Urine cytology is frequently used to monitor patients with a history of superficial bladder cancer or with persistent blood in the urine.

When is it prescribed?

A urine cytology test is prescribed in the following cases:

  • Monitoring patients with diagnosed or treated bladder cancer;
  • Persistent hematuria (blood in urine) of unclear origin;
  • Suspected malignancy of the urinary tract;
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of treatment for urological conditions.

For preliminary home monitoring of urine status, the Yellow Butterfly rapid test can be used — it detects deviations in the key parameters of a general urinalysis.
